Operatic Recital featuring Westborough's Karen Amlaw, soprano on Sun June 21

Soprano Karen Amlaw from Westborough06/21/09 – WORCESTER, MA – Westborough resident, soprano Karen Amlaw, accompanied by acclaimed pianist Olga Rogach, will present Mozart to Puccini & More, an operatic recital, on Sunday, June 21, 2009 (Fathers’ Day) at 2 PM at Briarwood Community Center, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA.  Admission to this performance is free and open to the public (donations to defray the costs of preparing and presenting this program will be accepted at the door).

The program is planned to open with arias from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Così Fan Tutte followed by selections from Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt, and Catalani’s La Wally.  Puccini works comprise the second half of the program, including selections from Turandot, Manon Lescaut, La Rondine, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi.

Ms. Amlaw, semi-finalist in the 2007 Peter Elvins Vocal Competition, returned to singing after a 15 year leave in September 2003.  Since then she has sung several partial roles including Fiordiligi (Così Fan Tutte), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Elettra (Idomeneo), Countessa Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), and Agathe (Der Freischüz).  Ms. Amlaw sang Mother Gerald in Boston Opera Collaborative’s production of Dialogues of the Carmelites under the direction of Michael Strauss and Metropolitan Opera director Marc Astafan and has been featured in programs with Opera Worcester, Mass Theatrica, and Lowell Opera.  Most recently she was invited to be the guest artist in a benefit concert at the Worcester Alumni Club where she sang several of the arias also planned for this recital program.  This summer Ms. Amlaw will return to Crittenden Opera Studio as Nedda (l Pagliacci), Mariane (Tartuffe) and Madame Pompous (Too Many Sopranos).  This coming season she will be joining Calliope in Boston – covering the title role in scenes from Suor Angelica, singing Garbriel in Haydn’s The Creation, and reprising some of the other Puccini arias planed on this recital program.

Soprano Karen Amlaw from WestboroughMs. Amlaw has received merit scholarships to support her operatic studies at both Richard Crittenden’s Opera Studio and New England Conservatory’s School of Continuing Education Opera Studio.  She has studied voice with Karen Lykes (currently professor of voice at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music), Maria Ferrante, and world renowned soprano Maria Spacagna.  Her coaches have included Brian Moll, Olga Rogach and Bradley Pennington, founder of Boston Bel Canto Opera.

When not singing Ms. Amlaw, who resides in Westborough with her two adopted cats-deni and Amigo, can be found using her teaching, marketing and administrative talents in support of artists and music education.  Currently, she is the Events Coordinator/Kids on Keys Program Director at Robinson Music Inc. here in Westborough, MA, Aria Sing Coordinator for Worcester Opera Works, as well as a marketing resource for local artists.  In addition, for the second year in a row, this spring Ms. Amlaw was invited to adjudicate Opera Worcester's Annual Vocal Scholarship Competition, which is open to graduating seniors throughout Worcester County planning to pursue a degree in voice.

Olga Rogach, Ms. Amlaw’s accompanist, is acclaimed for her collaborations with instrumentalists and soloists.  She received a Master of Music degree in piano performance from Russia's famed St. Petersburg Conservatory. After graduation she was appointed to the St. Petersburg Music College Faculty and became a featured pianist for the Literary Association of St. Petersburg and the All-Russian Theatrical Society.  Ms. Rogach appears extensively in New England, often as chamber musician or accompanist.  She is the official pianist for the Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Foundation, pianist for Worcester Opera Works and pianist for the Master Singers of Worcester. In addition Ms. Rogach is Music Director at First Parish Church of Northborough and a board member of Worcester Opera Works.
