How Small Stores Can Lure Holiday Shoppers

With economists predicting one of the weakest Decembers since 1991, merchants must put their best foot forward for top customers

Call it a customer service Christmas. Consumers are expected to rein in spending this year, and the retail climate favors big-box stores that can offer bargains. But because small retailers can't win price wars (BusinessWeek.com, 4/14/08), experts say independents need to leverage their biggest advantage over the chains: personal relationships with customers and the ability to deliver superior service. About the Corridor Nine Area Chamber

In 1974, business owners from the towns of Westborough, Northborough, Southborough and Shrewsbury created an organization known as the East Business Council. Although this organization was short lived, it was the first step in creating a unified voice for local business owners.

In 1979, the Westborough Business Council became affiliated with the then Worcester Area Chamber of Commerce under the name Westborough Chamber of Commerce. In the fall of 1986 members of the Northborough business community partnered with their neighbors to create the Westborough/Northborough Area Chamber of Commerce.

As time passed, and Central Massachusetts underwent substantial growth, the Route 9 corridor began to emerge as a formidable business destination. The Southborough Business Association came on board with the Westborough/Northborough Area Chamber in November 2000 followed three months later by the Shrewsbury business community. Realizing that this organization was quickly developing as an entity unto itself, the Chamber was renamed the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce and opened their own local office in Westborough in April 2001.

In January 2003, Corridor Nine officially became incorporated. With the significant development of the Corridor Nine communities and the focus on regional growth and development, the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce made the decision to dissolve its affiliation with the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and be an independent organization in February 2003. Today, the Corridor Nine Chamber continues to flourish and has become one of the most successful regional business organizations in the Commonwealth.
