Railroad Bridge Strikes Again!
Had another railroad bridge accident this morning. I learned about it from a reader of this site, who wrote in:
We had ANOTHER truck stuck under the railroad bridge today, during the morning rush hour. Traffic was badly backed up all over town and on Route 9. I was held for five minutes on Willow St while the police officer rightly let one lane get by. What is it going to take for us to do something? Simple signs obviously don't work. Months ago, I suggested an "early warning system" - place a bar (with bells or other noise) over the road, with a sign "IF YOU HIT THIS YOU WILL NOT FIT UNDER THE UPCOMING BRIDGE" Place it far enough back that the truck has time to turn around. Follow it up with a hefty fine for violation. WE NEED ACTION!Interesting idea. Ideas from anyone else? I've always been curious about why the road can't be lowered. Or the bridge raised, for that matter. Please write to us via the contact form, if you have any comments or insight into this issue. We'll post feedback in a future article.
Here are some facts as reported in the article Truck stuck under Westboro bridge; trains delayed, written by Linda Bock from the Telegram and Gazette web site.
According to Police, a 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer became wedged beneath the railroad bridge just after 6:30 a.m. and was removed by 9:00 a.m.
Police said Richard J. Mordue, 41, 313 Peel St., Quebec, Canada, was driving the truck. It is owned by K-Dac Enterprises, 1535 Snyders Road, Petersburg, Ontario, Canada, and contained 20,000 pounds of cabinets.
Trooper Jaworek removed the driver from service after finding a discrepancy in the trucker’s log book. He will not be permitted to drive for a period of time. No further information on that situation was available.
Police Chief Alan Gordon said a local towing company was able to unload the trailer and then was able to tow the vehicle out from under the bridge.
The incident remains under investigation by Westboro Officer Tyson Delong and Trooper James Jaworek.
