Westborough facing $967K budget deficit in fiscal 2011
The town is facing a projected budget deficit of nearly $967,000 for fiscal 2011, Town Manager Jim Malloy told selectmen during a budget presentation last night.
Before a packed room in the Forbes Municipal Building, Malloy also presented several solutions to fill that gap, chief among them an ongoing effort to change the town's insurance plan.
Overall, the news last night was grim. Even if the town can reach a deal with local unions to change the insurance plan - a potential savings of $900,000 to $1.5 million per year - Malloy said it will still likely have to cut services and increase property taxes in fiscal 2011 to stay under budget.
If the town can't reach an agreement on an insurance change, it may have to make across-the-board budget cuts of 1.8 percent this year, Malloy said.
