Elizabeth AndersonWestborough resident Elizabeth Anderson has earned the Girl Scout Silver Award and will be honored at a ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Worcester on May 3.  The Silver Award is the second highest award granted to a Girl Scout in grades 7-9.  Elizabeth has been a Girl Scout for 10 years and is a current member of Troop 30195.

The Silver Award is a service-oriented award pursued by girls on individual journeys who want to make a lasting difference in their community.  Prior to completing the Silver Award project, a Girl Scout must earn a leadership award, a career award, and complete a community assessment through which she identifies the issue she will address and starts to make the contacts that will help her in completing a Silver Award project.  She must also establish a relationship with an advisor who mentors her on the project.

Elizabeth’s Silver Award project was entitled “Fun Fiddlers.”  It consisted of a series of 10 fiddle lessons for a group of 12 students in grades 4-6 from Westborough and the surrounding area.  As a two-time Scottish fiddle champion, Elizabeth taught a variety of Celtic and American fiddle tunes.  Elizabeth provided each student with a book of tunes she compiled and an accompanying CD which she recorded herself.  The project culminated with a concert at the Willows at Westborough.  This project benefited Elizabeth’s students, the fiddle community, and the Willows residents, who enjoyed the concert very much.

Elizabeth is a freshman at Westborough High School, where she plays in the orchestra and is a member of the Tri-M music honor society and the Community Cooking Club.  She takes weekly private classical violin and fiddle lessons and is the principal second violin of the Worcester Youth Symphony Orchestra.  She has attended the Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle School for the past 3 years.  Elizabeth is also an outdoors enthusiast and belongs to Venture Crew 100 and the Girl Scout GO Group which does an annual backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail.  Elizabeth has recently been honored by being chosen to attend a national Girl Scout Destination this July in which she will travel to Costa Rica and spend 10 days backpacking, white     water rafting, rappelling, learning to surf, and living in the homes of native families.

Elizabeth is the daughter of Janet and Warren Anderson and sister of Ben.
