o Millipore Cuts Ribbon on $2 Million Solar Energy Project in Bedford

Billerica, Mass. – Millipore, a Billerica-based provider of technologies for bioscience research and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, on Monday announced the completion of a $2 million solar panel installation project at its Bedford facility. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the system, which will provide energy for Millipore’s Bedford and Billerica facilities. The solar panel project is one of the largest solar photovoltaic projects ever completed in Massachusetts.

o Laidlaw Energy to Convert Biomass and Solar Power Project in Southeast Mass.

Boston -- Laidlaw Energy Group, a developer of independent power plants, announced on Monday that it has signed an agreement with a Massachusetts based private equity firm to initially lease and subsequently acquire an operating oil and gas fired power plant in Southeastern Massachusetts. The plant is situated in an industrial park and currently serves the thermal energy needs of a leading developer and manufacturer of photovoltaic products and technology. Laidlaw has also signed an agreement with the photovoltaic company that specifies the business terms of a proposed 20-year power purchase agreement. The company said it intends to make additional details available on the project upon execution of the power purchase and lease agreements.

Cambridge, Mass. – Data Logix, a Cambridge-based company that is  currently in “stealth mode,” has raised $15 million in venture capital,  according to a filing by the company with the Securities and Exchange  Commission. Robert Gierkink, the company’s president, is a partner at  the investment firm General Catalyst Partners, as are three other of  its other board directors listed in the SEC filing. Data Logix is not  publicly disclosing its technology or business model yet.

o Univ. of Maine Awarded up to $8 Million for Floating Wind Farm

 Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine has been awarded up to $8  million by the U.S. Dept. of Energy to design and deploy two 10 kW  and one 100 kW floating offshore win turbine prototypes. Two turbines will  be located at the university’s deepwater offshore wind test site that will  be located in state waters and one turbine will be operated at an offshore  test site in the Isle of Shoals by the University of New Hampshire. “The  University consortium's research and development plan includes optimization  of designs for floating platforms by evaluating: (1) options for using more  durable, lighter, hybrid composite materials, (2) manufacturability, and (3)  deployment logistics,” an announcement said.

o Yale Engineer Wins $875,000 Packard Fellowship for Photon Research

 New Haven, Conn. -- Hong Tang, an electrical engineer at Yale’s  School of Engineering & Applied Science, has been awarded a $875,000  fellowship as one of the 16 young scientists from across the country  selected as this year’s Packard Fellows. Tang’s research in photonics  focuses on “the incredibly weak force exerted by ordinary light,” according  to a report by the university’s news service. He is investigating using this  force, rather than electricity, to manipulate components of silicon chips.

o Google to Launch Its Own E-book Store Next Year

 Mountain View, Calif. -- Google said that it plans to open its own  online e-book store next year, delivering e-books to any device with a web  browser, including laptops, cell phones and e-book readers. The store, to be  known as Google Editions, will launch with around a half-million  titles, secured from publishers with whom Google already has relationships.  Google will share revenue both with these publishers and online retailers  who choose to sell the books from their own online storefronts. The move  takes direct aim at Amazon, which sells e-books through its Kindle reader.
