o Norwalk-based IMS Health to be Acquired for $5.2 Billion
Norwalk, Conn. -- IMS Health, a Norwalk-based provider of market intelligence to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, announced on Thursday that it has entered into an agreement to be acquired by investment funds managed by TPG Capital and the CPP Investment Board, for $5.2 billion. Under the agreement, IMS shareholders will receive $22 in cash per share. IMS was co-founded in 1954 as Intercontinental Marketing Services, by Bill Frohlich, an advertising executive.

o Worcester-based World Energy Raises $2.5 Million in Private Placement
Worcester, Mass. -- World Energy Solutions, a Worcester-based operator of online exchanges for energy and green commodities, announced on Thursday that it has entered into an agreement with Bond Capital for the purchase of up to $2.5 million of company’s common stock. World Energy operates online exchanges for energy and green commodities. The company said proceeds from the deal will be used for general corporate purposes, including supporting the company's growth initiatives.

o Marlborough’s Block Engineering Wins $4.4 Million Government Contract
Marlborough, Mass. -- Block Engineering, a Marlborough-based developer of infrared spectrometers for chemical detection and analysis, announced on Thursday that it has been awarded a new $4.4 million government contract to develop a handheld infrared spectrometer that use Block's laser and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies. The spectrometer will be used for detection of solid and liquid explosive materials or other substances that could be used for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs), according to the announcement. Block's technology could also be used for the detection of chemical warfare agents, non-traditional agents and toxic industrial chemicals, the company said.

o Lowell-based BitWave Semiconductor Raises $1.3 Million
Lowell, Mass. – BitWave Semiconductor, a Lowell-based developer of semiconductors for mobile devices, has raised $1.3 million of debt, according to a new report by the company with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This follows a $10 million second round of venture capital for the company in August 2008. Founded in 2008, Bitwave develops technology that allows wireless carriers and cell phone manufacturers to deploy more services and devices.

Hopkinton, Mass. -- Facet Solutions, a privately held, venture-backed company developer of surgical devices based in Hopkinton, has raised $3.6 million of debt financing, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company is developing surgical devices for the treatment of facet-related spinal disorders. Facet Solutions also has received venture capital from its partners DeNovo Ventures, FirstMark Capital, and Spray Venture Partners.

(Waltham, Mass.) Raytheon Co., the Waltham-based defense contractor, announced that it has been awarded a $5.8 million contract modification for engineering services for the Patriot Air and Missile Defense system. The contract calls for Raytheon to provide systems analysis, software and hardware engineering, testing and logistics support. This is the eighth modification to the $128 million contract awarded in January 2009 by the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command.
