o Tewksbury-based Starent Networks to be Acquired by Cisco for $2.9 Billion

Tewksbury, Mass. – Starent Networks, a Tewksbury-based supplier of IP infrastructure products for mobile and converged carriers, has agreed to be acquired by Cisco, the San Jose-based provider of networking and communications technology, for $2.9 billion in cash. Starent was founded in 2000 and completed its initial public offering in 2007. The company has about 1,000 employees worldwide and had revenue of about $254.1 million last year, up 74% from the prior year. Upon completion of the deal, Starent will become the new Mobile Internet Technology Group, led by Starent Networks' president and CEO, Ashraf Dahod, according to an announcement.

Needham, Mass. -- The Corporate Executive Board (CEB), a provider of research and analysis services focused on corporate strategy and operations, said that it has acquiredTowerGroup, a Massachusetts-based provider of advisory services focused on the business and technological issues that impact the financial services industry. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. CEB said that the acquisition will deepen its financial services footprint in several target areas -- most notably technology, sales and marketing. "The combined organization will provide a wealth of intellectual capital to operating executives within and serving the financial services industry," said Karen Cone, TowerGroup's departing CEO.

o Beverly-based Eliza Corp. Acquires Sprigley

Beverly, Mass. – Eliza Corp., a Beverly-based provider of integrated healthcare communication technology, has completed its acquisition of Sprigley, the developer of a multi-channel recommendation engine and social networking platform designed specifically for use in the healthcare industry. Terms of the deal between the two privately held firms were not disclosed. Eliza said that the acquisition and subsequent software integration combines its own multi-modal outreach capabilities, interaction design expertise, and analytic platform with Sprigley’s Web 2.0 capabilities, including a personal recommendation engine and Web-based platform.

o Chelmsford-based Kronos Acquires Software Vendor Stromberg from Paychex

Chelmsford, Mass. – Kronos, a Chelmsford-based provider of workforce management software, has acquired the assets of time and attendance software vendor Stromberg fromPaychex, for an undisclosed amount of cash. Headquartered in Orlando, Stromberg was founded in 1989 and purchased by Paychex in 2004. The company operated as a standalone division within Paychex with its own sales, support, and development teams.
Stromberg’s 1,400 customers mainly include U.S.-based organizations in industries such as retail, hospitality, and not-for-profit. Customers include A&P Supermarkets, Bacardi Bottling, Office Depot, PetCo, and Universal Studios.

o Bedford-based Reveal Imaging Technologies Awarded $3.9 Million DHS Contract

Bedford, Mass. -- Reveal Imaging Technologies, a Bedford-based developer of threat detection systems, has been awarded a contract valued at $3.9 million for a personnel inspection system with the Department of Homeland Security. The three-phase contract includes a feasibility study, algorithm development and performance testing of a prototype multi-technology, automated personnel inspection system, according to an announcement. Reveal said it believes multiple sensor technologies will result in enhanced performance and increased security in this application, based on its work in explosives detection.

(Boston) Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced that the City of Boston has been awarded the Solar America Cities grant for the purpose of establishing a solar evacuation route. The grant from the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) will allow the city to integrate solar energy applications into its emergency response infrastructure by creating a pilot solar evacuation route that will feature a backup photovoltaic (PV) system at Boston’s main emergency-vehicle fueling station, as well as solar-powered traffic control and monitoring equipment, lighting, and emergency radio repeaters.

(Cambridge, Mass.) In a paper appearing in Physical Review Letters, MIT researchers present a new algorithm that a report says could make quantum computers far more useful than has been widely considered. Quantum computers make direct use of quantum mechanical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement, to perform operations on data.
