There will not be a farmers market at Baystate Commons this summer however we have heard of plans to have a farmers market the The Green Thumb.

Worcester Magazine has an annual "best of" contest for businesses & services in various categories.

Should we have something similar in Westborough? What do you think?

You may get your wish. The Bay State Green committee is supporting the request to hold a farmer's market at the Bay State Green. Stayed tuned.

Sidewalks are used and we need them and there are more than two people using them as mentioned in the previous post.
We need to support this. Otherwise the community is isolated and people walking on the streets given the behaviors of the drivers in the Center and side roads becomes a liability.

This is a fabulous idea and there is perfect central place with parking and great atmosphere. I suggest the Park at Baystate Commons.
People would come, there are public facilities, garbage, etc.
Let's do it. Local resources rock.

Maybe I missed them but I haven't noticed the new sidewalks. Whenever I walk around Westborough, I have to often walk on the road! Even the curved portion of road that was built recently (a few years ago now) on Mill Pond Rd did not have a path built for pedestrians to walk on! Very short sighted (sorry to whomever was responsible for that). Build the paths and the people will use them. It may be expensive but hey, if most modern towns and cities have them - why can't we!

You know what I'd like to see in Westborough? A farmer's market/art market. We have some nice farms in Westborough and its surrounds; it would be great if farmers and organic growers had a market to sell their produce, a market that was clean, comfortable, with good public restrooms (these should be beautiful too - wouldn't that startle people!) It could sell artist's wares and craft wares and all complimented by live music for setting the atmospherics! Not some crumby market, but a really upbeat, interesting, lively and beautiful one. Something like this could give this town some added revenue and distinction.

These are all wonderful, utopian ideas. Problem is it would be just about the two of us taking advantage of such "upgrades". I mean the Town of Westborough spent Millions on all of these great brand new sidewalks throughout the village and I can tell you - Because I have been without a vehicle for eight months - I am one of three other people getting any real usage out of them. What a waste of money! Let's get people up off their behinds and determined to put down their car keys before we invest in such broad measures...

My husband and I are thrilled to be brand new residents here in Westborough and were honored to host our family for Thanksgiving. However we were incredibly dismayed to find that our family was all ticketed and fined for parking on the street in front of our home. Our home, on a holiday, in a quiet neighborhood??? Does this mean that we can never have visitors to our new home. Our driveway is small, so people will always need to park on the lawn/street in front of our home when they come to visit. I just can't believe that my entire family went home on Thanksgiving with leftovers and parking tickets! Welcome to the Neighborhood!
Laura Milewski  - Board of Selectman mtg min 10.27.09 "Clear not Plo   |72.93.117.xxx |2009-11-30 10:06:29
Here's the content from the meeting minutes: "Chairman Emery requested that the DPW clear (not plowed) the sidewalks at the park during the winter months. Mr. Walden, DPW Manager, acknowledged the request and said that the sidewalks will be cleared (not plowed) at their leisure after a snowstorm."

I only kindly ask that you consider one single plowed path for the those employees that cross the park each lunch day, the kids that walk over to Panera's through the park and the elderly early morning "walkers". Oh yes, and those of use that walk our dogs....

I know you may visit the park and it's a ghost town, but I know differently and there should be at least one path considered from East Main Street or Union street through the rotunda area to the stores.

We appreciate the consideration!
admin  - Guess we need both an arts AND rec center!   |SAdministrator |2009-09-11 02:21:07
I've often thought how great it would be for us to have an arts center in town... maybe it needs to be a combined arts and rec center, huh?

What sorts of things are you looking for?

Also, there is the Rec brochure for this fall from the town you might want to look at:

(you'll have to copy and paste the above link into your browser)

there is nothing to do in this town as a teenager without going to the local parties and getting wasted. Too bad not all of us want to do this.
Laura Milewski  - Gazebo Plantings - Parkview on the Common   |71.248.161.xxx |2009-09-04 03:14:49
There is a glorious team of people landscaping the gazebo area of the park at Parkview on the Commons today.
Thank you to do those that are putting the monies and the hours towards this project and bringing beautiful new "green" to the Park.
I have a favor - as a community can we throw an eye - this gazebo is attacked by countless hours of teenagers skateboarding and riding their bikes on the cement wall that supports this artwork daily and late evening.
I'll do my best to keep a hawk eye out while walking the dog, but need the help of others as well.
Thank you again for your dedication!

laura milewski  - Parkview on the Common and dogs   |72.93.117.xxx |2009-07-20 04:23:13
It's been brought to my attention that the potential to ban dogs from Parkview on the Commoon, specifically the Park on Union Street is under consideration. I live in the condos facing the Park.
This makes me sad as a dog owner because I can tell you that the majority of us, do pick up after our dogs and I can also tell you who doesn't. Those that drive up from surrounding towns and are frequenting the restaurants in the area, love to park, eat, leave their dogs in the car and then walk their dogs w/o picking up. Those that daily frequent the park, also pick up after those that didn't because we don't want ourselves to be subject to this.

Let me also describe the bigger part of the issue in this park - first hand - I pick up after the kids. Yes, the kids that come and leave their food trash, their papers and their dead, soupy, sticky icecream sticks and their starbucks coffees, etc. We take a garbage bag and walk this property. So before anyone bans dogs from park that is truly enjoyed by many, please review the real issue of trash and critters associated with sandwiches left behind and bottles of all sorts. We love this park and so do those that don't have dogs who's lives are enriched by a critter that wags his tail at them and puts a smile on their stressed out lives. Let's come up with a solution not a slammed door. Thank you.

J. Arthur,

It sounds to me like you have a personal vengeance with the Westborough P.D. rather than an honest concern that they are unfair to the public. I do agree with you that Police Officers should not treat everyone as a criminal, but the fact that you and I pay taxes does not give us the right to feel that the Police "work" for us. The police are meant to enforce laws and keep the public safe. While unpopular, especially if this happens to you, this does mean sometimes making arrests and writing traffic citations. There are some police officers that do abuse their power and shame an honorable profession but it is my opinion that if you go into any situation with a bad attitude there will be a less than favorable outcome. This holds true with dealing with the police, as it should! So next time you deal with the police say "Good Morning" rather that "What did I do now?".

Do any other westborough residents have flood insurance?

We got wrecked on tuesday. Our driveway caved in in parts, a retaining wall broke, our yard has huge pits in it and loads of rocks and gravel now sit on our yard (both front and back)

We are right across oldham where they've been doing construction and we got the worst hit of all our neighbors

I am a Westborough resident. This is a great idea - having a forum for residents to be able to put forth suggestions for improvements to our community. I have a few on my "wish list" even though I love living in Westborough. Here are some that I would absolutely love to see come true.
1. More public seating throughout the town, eg benches.
2. Bike paths wherever possible, for leisure and especially for commuters to be able to connect (by bike) to the commuter rail station. This would be such a winner with raising home values and lowering carbon emissions.
3. Another commuter rail station constructed between Southborough Station and Westborough Station. It could go to the east of the Bay State Commons, adjacent to the semi-used warehouse with all the pallets on the property. An existing road leads there and there is enough space for a large parking lot. This would definitely increase the values of the Bay State Commons condominiums and there may be a rush to buy them. So far they haven't moved much. The distance between the Southboro and Westboro stations is quite long and could handle another stop inbetween.
4. Make Westborough as low a carbon emitting town as possible. Besides bike paths, by also connecting to the bus operated by the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority which services Natick, Framingham, Marlborough, Southborough, Milford, Hopkinton, Ashland and Holliston. We don't need to re-invent the wheels, it's already done! But we have to hook up to it.

I just happened upon this site and applaud you Michael Hyde for taking a lead in this. I cannot wait to read more on the website in the next few days. Regards! Denise Ward
J. Arthur  - Police attitudes towards residents   |96.237.32.xxx |2009-02-08 03:25:20
Westborough Police dictatorship or bulling attitudes stem back for years, but have been on the increase. The inaugaration of chief Gordon spirited the new regiem of un controlled patrolmen who have the attitiude that they are the judge and jury. The control and interpretation of the law is in their hands. That "probubal clause" is a tool to contrive further invasive and illeagle actions. Actions that have been proven in Westborough District Court to have violated citzens rights.Who controls or curtails this continued activity? The collective citzens of Westborough, who when violated enough will finally stand up. Stand up and say;
Enough! Enough harrasment. Enough brutal bulling of young people, the average citizen, the casual vistitor. Police are public servants. They work for the tax payer. If they don't solve real crime, prevent real crime, then they are out. I cannot condone paying the high taxes in this town to experience police brutality.
