Matt Beaton Jumps In (from the ShrewsBuried blog)
by Mark Adler
For the first time in a decade, someone other than Karyn Polito is running for State Representative.
Local businessman, Matt Beaton, is preparing a run for the Republican nomination. He owns Beaton Construction, LLC.
He's a lifelong Shrewsbury resident. a town meeting member and member of the Shrewsbury Development Corporation. He says that, "being a small business owner here in town, I know the struggles small businesses face dealing with taxes, insurance and general obstructions to running a healthy business."
He also says he's an active advocate of environmental preservation. He owns a construction company that focuses on green building and energy efficiency. He is also an avid outdoorsman and says he has "developed a passionate desire to do my part to preserve our natural environment."
Beaton has an undergraduate degree from WPI in Biotechnology with a concentration in Environmental Engineering. He later attended BU for a Masters Degree in Energy and Environmental policy. He worked in a law firm while training for the United Stated National Rowing Team. He trained at the Donohue Rowing Center and represented the club and Shrewsbury at the World Rowing Championships. Beaton practiced as an environmental engineer for two years before starting his own construction company.
For community service, he has been a Big Brother for over 14 years and his "little brother" is now a crew chief for his company. Some of his charitable organizations in which he's been involved has included St. Mary's parish, Why Me, OutdoorExplorations and Habitat for Humanity.
His website is still under construction, but you'll be hearing more about him here on ShrewsBuried!
Rep. Polito is running for State Treasurer, but hasn't made a formal announcement yet. That's likely to come Monday morning at the Omni Parker House in Boston.
Will other Republicans challenge Polito for the Republican nomination for Treasurer? Two Democrats are already vying for their party's nomination. Will other Republicans challenge Beaton for the Representative nomination? And will Democrats have a decent candidate in the Representative's race? Time will tell.

REP. DYKEMA ANNOUNCES NEW HEALTH PLAN OPTION FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
Boston – Rep. Carolyn Dykema (D – Holliston) today announced a new plan launched by the Massachusetts Health Connector to help small business owners control the dramatically rising costs of employee health insurance.
“The crushing cost of health insurance has been is a recurring theme in my conversations with small businesses,” said Rep. Dykema. “Health insurance costs are unquestionably one of the major hurdles to economic expansion and job creation, and our small businesses have been particularly hard hit. While I continue to advocate for broad reform, I am pleased that the new Business Express plan will offer our small businesses some needed relief.”
The new Business Express program is for small businesses with 50 or fewer employees. For some businesses with five or fewer employees, the savings may be more than $300 per employee per year. Select network plans may offer savings that range from 10 to 15 percent.
Employers will be able to select from an array of options offered by major carriers including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, CeltiCare, Fallon Community Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Health New England, Neighborhood Health Plan and Tufts Health Plan.
Small business owners can find out more about the plan by calling a broker or going to the Health Connector’s website, www.mahealthconnector.org or call Health Connector’s customer service line at 1-877-MA-ENROLL (1-877-623-6765).

Statement from State Rep. Karyn Polito on Governor Patrick's FY-2011 Budget
STATEMENT OF REPRESENTATIVE KARYN POLITO ON GOVERNOR PATRICK’S FY-2011 BUDGET
“Governor Patrick’s Fiscal Year 2011 budget is a missed opportunity to restore stability to our state’s finances and to make the sort of responsible decisions Massachusetts residents are relying upon to lead us out of this recession. You don’t have to look very deep into the Governor’s budget to see that his numbers don’t work. Governor Patrick is still relying on one-time revenue from the federal government and on savings from the Rainy Day Fund to pay our bills, and he’s betting on a hope that tax collections will suddenly reverse trend and pick up later this year. That’s a risky bet to make and it’s an unsustainable and unreliable way to spend money.”

Toxic chemicals & safer alternatives in MA - State Sen. Eldrige
Quote from State Senator Jamie Eldridge: “The Safer Alternatives Bill will not only protect millions in Massachusetts from exposure to toxic chemicals, it will do so in a way that supports economic growth and can save the Commonwealth more than $100 million dollars a year. This report adds to the ever-growing body of evidence regarding the link between many common, chronic diseases and exposure to chemicals found in many household products. This is an incredibly important bill, and I’m proud to support it.” Click "Read more:" below for the full story.
