altCoyotes in Westborough?  We first learned about this in 2008.  Perhaps you've been seeing articles about concerns, attacks, or other general coyote news:

The recent coyote attack in town was raised and discussed at last night's Board of Selectmen meeting of June 22, 2010. (See video from WestboroughTV, time 00:24:50 to 01:01:30)  One suggestion was to conduct a public education campaign which could include, for example, a 2-hour seminar to learn about coyotes and how to prevent attacks.

As the Telegram reported, "Laura Hajduk, furbearer project leader for the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, said attacks such as the ones in Westboro are uncommon. ... She said about eight coyotes live in Westboro, although it may seem there are more."   Laura also suggested posting links to resources from Mass Wildlife.  For example:

Here's our original article about preventing conflicts with coyotes  which also included information from Mass Wildlife on specifically about what to do.  For detailed information, please see the full Mass Wildlife article on coyotes, "Living With Coyotes".

UPDATE: 2:54 p.m.   Here is the information the town put out on their web site:

I've added the Boston Globe magazine article as suggested. Wow! There's a lot of info there, and it's surprising how many times people are involved with feeding them (intentionally AND inadvertently). No wonder they're around, if food is easily available.

On May 30th the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine did a very good article about coyotes in New England. You may want to link to it as part of your news and resources.

Hopefully it will help people learn that most conflicts between coyotes and people start with people feeding coyotes (on purpose or inadvertently). Then maybe people can change their behavior to minimize those conflicts.

Thank you,
Donna
