POP
WARNER TO BE HONORED ON 1997 POSTAGE STAMP
Philadelphia, Pa. - Glenn “Pop” Warner, the
legendary football coach whose name is synonymous with youth
football in America, became the third coach selected to
grace the United States Postal Service’s “Legendary Coaches”
stamp series which will be issued in 1997.
The artwork was unveiled during halftime of
the Temple-Miami football game at Veterans Stadium in Phialdelphia
by U.S. Postal Service Governor S. David Fineman; Temple
University’s Director of Athletics Dave O’Brien; Pop Warner
Little Scholars Executive Director Jon Butler, and USPS
Philadelphia Lead Executive Allen Lariviere.
Warner will join Chicago Bears football coach
George Halas and University of Alabama’s Paul “Bear” Bryant
as one of the four “Legendary Football Coaches” stamps to
be issued next fall. The fourth coach in the series will
be announced and unveiled tomorrow.
“Pop Warner was an amazing innovator and coach
whose memory lives on through his youth football program,”
said USPS Governor Fineman. “The Postal Service is proud
to recognize his commitment to guiding youngsters and his
legendary college coaching career.”
Warner, who finished his career coaching the
Temple Owls from 1933-38, sported an impressive 319-106-32
record during his 43-year coaching career. Other notable
achievements were 30 All-Americans he developed.
Warner died on September 7, 1954, but was
remembered by sportswriter Red Smith as “one of the truly
original minds in football.” Warner is credited with the
three-point stance, the screen pass, the spiral punt, the
wingback formation, the unbalanced line, the shifting defense,
the rolling body block, the blocking dummy, numbering players’
jerseys, and the use of the thigh and shoulder pads.
