Polito hosts Informational Meeting on "Do Not Call" Registry

PRESS RELEASE::

BOSTON - Representative Karyn E. Polito, R-Shrewsbury, today hosted Anne Collins, Deputy Director and Chief of Staff of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation to discuss the implementation of the "Do Not Call" Registry at the Westborough Senior Center. Rep. Polito and Ms. Collins provided helpful information on how to sign up for the Registry as well as answered any questions.

"I am thrilled to announce the implementation of the 'Do Not Call' Registry," stated Polito. "Each one of us has been interrupted during our dinner by a telemarketer. This 'Do Not Call' Registry eliminates this inconvenience from our private lives."

The Telemarketing Act will help consumers avoid the repeated interruption of certain telemarketing calls in their homes. Currently the State website www.Mass.gov hosts information about the law for both consumers and telemarketers. Consumers have until March 1st to register for the first list, which will go into effect on April 1st. The list will be updated every quarter thereafter. Consumers will be able to sign-up on the Internet, by phone, or through the mail. The Massachusetts "Do Not Call" registry will have no fee and consumers will not be asked to provide personal information like a social security number. Consumers will also be able to get information on their rights under the law at the website. Consumers may begin to sign up using the following information:

Online: www.mass.gov/donotcall Consumer Line (Toll Free) 866-231-2255 (866-231-CALL) U.S. Mail MA Do Not Call Program P.O. Box 1348 Boston, MA 02117

"I was extremely pleased to work with Ms. Collins to bring information on this exciting new registry to our local residents," stated Polito. "The implementation of this registry will bring an end to most so called 'cold calling' telephone solicitation for residential consumers who sign-up."

Today's program has been taped and will be shown on local television. For more information on the "Do Not Call" Registry, contact Rep. Polito at 617-722-2488.
