Girl Scout Spring Cleaning Events on March 28 – Foam/Styrofoam™ and Textile Recycling

Two Girl Scout Recycling Events!

PS 6 Foam Recycling Event

9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Tufts Machine Lot

Need to clear out your collection of PS 6 Foam? Have a few closets and an attic to empty of old clothing, sheets, stuffed animals, and more? Two Westborough Girl Scout troops will be holding recycling events on March 28, 2015.

GS Troop 30507 will hold the next foam/Styrofoam™ recycling event from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Tufts Machine Lot at 55 E. East Main St. For the fourth time, Central One Federal Credit Union is sponsoring the event, which is run in partnership with ReFoamIt.

Residents from Westborough and surrounding communities can bring EPS #6 foam (Styrofoam™) gift packaging, egg cartons, coffee cups without wraps, coolers, meat and veggie trays, take-out containers and any other foam product with PS 6 on it.

All labels, paper, cardboard, and tape should be removed from each piece of Foam. All food related containers and cups should be rinsed or washed before recycling. We also accept foam labeled with #4 Polyethylene and #5 Poly Pro, packing peanuts (bagged), and bubble wrap.

Once the foam is collected, ReFoamIt processes it into compressed blocks, then small pellets that get recycled into picture frames, eyeglass frames, car bumpers and molding. It takes hundreds of years for foam to decompose in a landfill. Recycling it removes it from the waste stream and puts it back into useful products.

Textile Recycling Fundraiser

9:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Westborough High School

Just down the road at Westborough High School at 90 W. Main St., GS Troop 30555, in partnership with Bag2School, will hold a textile recycling fundraiser from 9:00am to 2:00pm. The troop is in its final stretch of fundraising for an adventure/service project trip to Costa Rica in August 2015. The girls will be collecting unwanted textiles which includes adult and children’s clothing, shoes and boots (tied together if possible), hats, belts, purses, backpacks, blankets, tablecloths, towels, pillows, and stuffed animals. We accept all clean and dry items, even with rips, tears, and stains. Please, no wet, moldy, or mildewed items. Items that cannot be reused or worn will be shredded and recycled for use in insulation, carpet backing, etc. To donate, drive into the high school off of West Main St and proceed to the circle drive in front of the main door. Girl Scouts will be there to collect donations.

More information for both events is available on Facebook at R3: Reduce, Reuse, ReFoamIt. For questions, contact Julie Baldwin at juliebaldwin@verizon.net.
